Love your Liver

Let’s Talk About The Liver

The liver is one of the most important organs in our body and I feel it should be addressed when considering optimal health and wellness.  Its job is to filter all the blood in your body.  It consistently filters toxins, drugs, and wastes the body creates.  It is like our own chemical power plant within, processing everything that you eat, breathe, and absorb through your skin.  The liver stores fat-soluble vitamins such as D and minerals such as iron, and releases them to the blood as needed.  It also generates bile to aid in digestion by breaking down fats.

Indicators that it may be time to optimize your liver:

  • Achey uncomfortable feeling under the right rib cage
  • Stiff joints upon waking
  • Pain in the right shoulder blade
  • Feeling sluggish after a fatty meal
  • Bloating/distension
  • Inability to digest food, becoming allergic to everything, and seasonal allergies
  • Easily irritated or angered

Optimize your liver with a cleanse or fast:

  • Eat lightly or abstain from food
  • Drink vegetable juices
  • Use chlorella and/or spirulina
  • Reduce heavy animal meats, eggs, dairy/fats for a few weeks

I would like to suggest a simple 5 ingredient recipe that is organic and cleansing for the liver.  It is one of my favorites and Jocelyn loves it as well.

Beet/Apple/Fennel Salad with Olive oil and Lemon dressing

Ingredients

  • 1 whole raw beet peeled
  • 1 apple, cored
  • 1/2 fennel bulb (I have also used dried fennel seed)
  • Juice of one lemon plus 1/4 tsp lemon zest
  • Equal amount of olive oil as lemon juice
  • Two pinches of sea salt

Instructions

  • Cut the beet, apple and fennel into sizes to use in food processor
  • Use the shredding or grating disc (I have made this without a processor and simply chopped everything)
  • Place into mixing bowl
  • Zest lemon before squeezing for juice
  • Juice the lemon and add an amount of olive oil to lemon juice
  • Add a couple of pinches of sea salt and whisk the olive oil and lemon
  • Toss the dressing into the salad

Enjoy!
